What is the difference between active RFID and passive RFID? How to choose?

RFID tags are divided into active tags and passive tags according to whether they have a power source. Active RFID tags have their own power supply (such as an onboard battery), while passive tags obtain energy through electromagnetic induction from the reader.

Detailed comparison:

**Power supply:** Passive RFID tags have no internal battery; their energy comes from the RFID reader. The tag works by the reader transmitting energy to the tag, which then activates and sends back data. Active RFID tags have built-in batteries and can actively broadcast signals at set intervals.

**Read range:** Passive tags are thin and short, with a relatively short read range, typically within a few meters; active tags are relatively more expensive and larger in size, but have a longer read range, up to 100 meters or more.

**Service life and cost:** Passive tags have a long service life (up to 10 years or more) and low cost (0.15 yuan), suitable for high-volume, low-cost items such as clothing or packaging. Active tags have high cost (50-300 yuan), battery life of 2-5 years, suitable for high-value assets such as vehicles, tools, or machinery.

**Application scenarios:** Passive tags are suitable for access control cards, clothing tags, logistics pallets, etc.; active tags are suitable for container tracking, real-time positioning systems, vehicle management, etc.

There is also a semi-passive (semi-active) RFID tag, where its own sensors and circuits can be powered by an internal battery, but the communication part still needs to obtain energy from the reader signal, offering unique advantages in terms of contact range.
